Personnel
Geological Oceanographer focusing on high-resolution investigations in the sedimentary record for natural variability, change, and events, as well as environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities. This includes the refinement of short-lived radioisotopes (geochronology and tracers) combined with high-resolution elemental techniques (XRF) and sediment texture and bulk composition to investigate the geologic record and geologic processes. Projects include investigations in the Gulf of America including shallow water and deep-sea sedimentation patterns and controls, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, West FL Shelf, Tampa Bay, as well as Pacific deep-sea, and Caribbean (St. Lucia, Dominica, US Virgin Islands, and Cuba).
Dr. Schwing earned his B.S. in Marine Science (geology focus) from Eckerd College (2006) and his Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography from the University of South Florida (2011). He manages the Marine Geochemistry Laboratory at Eckerd College and is a courtesy research faculty member at USF College of Marine Science, where he manages the Marine Radiochemistry Laboratory. His research focuses on Marine Pollution and the impacts of natural and human stressors on seafloor environments, including deep sea mining, oil spills, radioactivity, red tide, and plastics across coastal to deep-ocean environments. He has served as chief or co-chief scientist on numerous oceanographic expeditions and is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and technical publications, and has delivered over 70 research and educational seminars to diverse audiences.
Dr. Gregg R. Brooks is a Professor of Marine Science and Geosciences at Eckerd College, with >40 years of professional experience. He supervises a fully functioning sedimentology lab, and in conjunction with colleague Rebekka Larson, a short-lived radioisotope geochronology lab. Specializing in marine geology, his current research interests focus on high-resolution records of extreme events in coastal and marine sedimentary deposits, including high-resolution geochronology of natural and anthropogenic impacts. Dr. Brooks has produced >70 publications in the peer-reviewed literature, and has served as PI or co-PI on >90 grants/contracts.
